1 Peter 2:1-10

There are three points I want you to remember from this message:

1.                We have a new nature in Christ

2.                Our lives form the building that is the church

3.                We are a royal priesthood

The first word is “Therefore”   Author's statement to remember what he have just wrote before in the 1st chapter:

We have a living hope in our Savior Jesus

So be holy, set apart for God

                     Love each other

                     Obey the Truth

1 Peter 2:1-3

As Christians we must stop living the way we were taught

 we are a new creation

Get rid of :

                     Malice=wickedness-a vicious disposition towards others

                     Deceit=To deceive and trap, treachery

Hypocrisy=Devoid of sincerity & genuineness    two different masks

                     Envy-Bitterness aroused by another's possessions

We cannot live for God and keep these attitudes. After accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior there is not room left for these in our hearts.  If there is then there may be a problem.

We are made to be the image of God.

We as Christians are being molded, conformed to the image of Christ.  We should take on the same appearance as our Lord.  To do this we must get rid of all of the nastiness in our lives.

1 Peter 1:14 “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.; for it is written: Be holy because I am holy.”

No more hoping for bad things to happen to people we don’t like, no more trying to trick them and take advantage of they.  No more hiding our true feelings behind false ones.  We must let go of our envy of others.  The malice, deceit, hypocrisy and envy must end.  That is the old nature and we cannot carry that and truly follow Jesus as we should.  Put on your NEW NATURE

Romans 8:29  “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, the we might be the first born among many brothers and sisters.”

1 Peter 1:22 “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.”

Like New Born Babies

Desire pure milk from their mother

We should desire the Word of God-Both Jesus and Scripture

Daily Scripture reading, mediating on the word

We cannot eat only once a week on Sunday

We must feast on the Word of God every day

In John 6 when many of Jesus’ followers start to fall away Jesus says to the twelve, “You do not want to leave too, do you?”

John 6:68 says, “Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”

Peter knew what he needed to grow spiritually, the words of life from Jesus, the Word of God.

1 Peter 2:4-8

Image of a building, a living building

Starts with the foundation-Jesus-the Living Stone

He is alive, resurrected by the power of God

                     The cornerstone of our faith

We place our trust in the one who loved us to the point of death.

We trust the one whose death on the cross has redeemed us, allowing our sins to be no more.

A cornerstone is the most important stone set in a building, if it is not cut square and true, being level, the rest of the building will shape irregularly and uneven.  It will have gaps and imperfections that might make it unusable.   We have the perfect corner stone.  He gives us a solid foundation to live our lives.

When we accept Jesus we become like living stones

The Lord uses us to build His church

Not talking about brick and mortar like 2900 Mill

We are this building, we are the stones

When someone is away, there is a hole in the building

We need to be here together

A Christian not in fellowship with other believers is likely just a rock

We are the living, breathing stones of God's church

Ephesians 3:19-22, “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus as the chief cornerstone.  In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.

Verse 6 qoutes Isaiah 28:16

we have hope in the last part of the verse

The one who trust in Him will never be put to shame

The world will try to tear us down, to shame us and persecute us but we will prevail

Verse 7  The word precious refers to a valuable gemstone.  How precious is the One who brings eternal life and calls us to share it with Him.

Verse 8 is another quote from Isaiah, “A stone that cause the people to stumble.”  This is referring to those who do not accept Jesus.

                     Movie scenes and stories

items are lost or discarded, buried by the wind, only a small portion is visable

Entire cities and civilizations are lost and buried

Some will trip on what is there, visable but not seen as valuable

Others will see this precious stone and dig it up and see the value and keep it

Archaeologists  have found many lost cities this way

Jesus is that cornerstone that becomes a tripping hazard to the world

I stumbled over this stone until the day the Lord helped me to see the value of the precious stone-I WILL KEEP THAT PRECIOUS STONE!

Our cornerstone, Jesus, is perfect and He enables the rest of the building to be set right.  He is solid and sturdy, able to withstand everything.  This cornerstone will never weaken or fail.  That is where we have placed our trust and we will never be washed away or have our living building collapse because the cornerstone has made the building solid and able to withstand anything.

1 Peter 2:9-10

We are:

A Chosen People-God has chosen us

                     A Royal Priesthood

                     A Holy Nation

                     God's special possession

The Royal Priesthood-God established the priesthood in Exodus 19: 5-6, “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”

God establishes the priesthood so there was an intermediary between the sinful nation and the holy God.  We are now that priesthood.  But we as believers do not need the priests.  We are allowed to go directly to God, no intermediary is required.

So why the Royal Priesthood?

There is still a world out there that has not repented of their sins and turned back to the Father.  It is our job to speak truth to the world, to pray for them, and share the gospel of Jesus with them.  We are the new priests.  No fancy robes necessary, nothing to brag about.  We are to love them.  How many of you have someone that you have a very hard time liking?  This is where that new Nature comes in.  We set aside everything to so we can do what God is calling us to do, what is that?

1 Peter 1:22 “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.”

That is our duty as Royal Priest, to share the love of Jesus Christ with the world.

So the three things I wanted to tell you to understand from 1 Peter 2:1-10

1.                We have a new nature in Christ- We are conforming to the image of Jesus Christ and therefore are called love others just as we love God, even our enemies

2.                Our lives form the building that is the church-Go has placed His Spirit in us and we are the living body of the church founded on Jesus

3.                We are a royal priesthood- We have been chosen to tell the world about Jesus and what He has done for us and for them if they accept His message.
